Why you shouldn’t fear Mercury Retrograde

If you are new to astrology, you might be thinking – well what is a retrograde? Quite simply, it refers to the apparent backwards movement of a planet – however the planet isn’t actually moving backwards, it is just an illusion.

Astrologically speaking, when a planet is retrograde, its energy is believed to be more introspective and internalised. The themes and qualities associated with that planet may manifest in a more reflective manner. Retrograde periods are often seen as times for re-evaluation, reflection, and revisiting old issues. Different planets have different retrograde periods, with Mercury being the most well-known for its frequent retrograde cycles.

How often does Mercury retrogrades occur?

They occur up to 3 times per year, lasting for around 3 weeks each time. However, its important to note that Mercury will enter its shadow period pre and post-retrograde, lasting for up to two weeks, so if you’re feeling a bit out of sorts a few weeks before or after the retrograde, then this explains why!

Mercury will travel through each sign of the zodiac, for example, the upcoming Mercury retrograde will be happening in the sign of Aries between (1st April – 24th April 2024), followed by August’s mercury retrograde taking place in the sign of Virgo on the 4th August – 27th August 2024 and then moving to the sign of Leo on the 14th August. The final mercury retrograde for this year will take place in Sagittarius between the 25th of November – 15th of December 2024.

What does Mercury retrograde represent?

Well, Mercury is the planet of communication, short-distance travel, intellect, technology, and thinking.

So when it appears to be moving backwards, you might experience delays, misunderstandings, technology issues, and complications within various areas of your life.

Each retrograde theme will bring with it a completely different flavour and theme, offering a distinct influence on each individual. It’s important to look at your current transits on Astro.com which will offer tailored insights into how the retrograde may specifically affect you.

My personal experience of Mercury retrogrades

From my personal experience, Mercury going retrograde is a great time to hit the pause button and slow down – it has made me reflect on my current life choices, past experiences and take the time to go inward through journalling, meditating, and practicing yoga.

In the past, I used to be easily influenced by the negative narratives surrounding Mercury retrograde. I would overthink and panic about potential disruptions in my life, fearing that everything would be turned upside down. However, as I’ve grown and learned, I’ve come to understand that whatever is meant to unfold during this period will do so naturally.

Now, instead of resisting or fearing Mercury retrograde, I approach it with a sense of surrender and acceptance. I trust that whatever doesn’t align with my path will naturally depart from my life, making space for new growth and opportunities.

In conclusion, Mercury retrogrades have become a time for me to embrace introspection, release control, and trust in the unfolding of my journey. By surrendering to the natural flow of life during these periods, I’ve found greater peace, clarity, and confidence in navigating life’s twists and turns.
